Light House School in Negombo

Katunayaka Roman Catholic Junior School is situated in a town named Katunayaka. It is in the Western Province in Sri Lanka. At the beginning there were about five teachers and seventy five children. In 1960 this has become a government school. At the very beginning the school had only one building and girls and boys were studying separately. But now we have nine buildings and girls and boys are studying together. In the same time we didn’t have electricity and water. Now it is great pleasure to mention that we have water and electricity.

Recently our school has named the first ‘Light House School’ in the Negombo Zone. All the teachers in the academic staff encourage students to speaking English during the school hours. Every Wednesday the school holds the Children’s Assembly which is totally a work of students. Teachers act as mere supporters standing behind. English Language is given prominence there and most of the items are done in English. We do combined activities with neighboring schools such as G.C.E. (O/L) Seminars.

In our school we have two bands. A Western Band for girls and an Oriental Band for boys. We have been awarded many prizes for Sports, English language, Sinhala language and other subjects too in Divisional Level up to All Island Level. Some of our children have joined for programmes of the Natioal Television in Sri lanka and we have been rewarded for their talents. We have our own dancing group and they are performing in and outside the School.
